Top Marketing Mistake and How to fix it

Aug 30, 2022

Today we will focus on marketing, more specifically on what has been the top mistake I have seen canine rehab therapists make when it comes to marketing and, most importantly, what can you do today to address that mistake. You have likely noticed by now that I am a huge proponent of running a business that fits our lifestyle rather than the other way around. Meaning, being a business owner is not an easy task and it does come with added responsibilities and challenges that most folks are not willing to take, and we would do a disservice to ourselves if we don’t mold our business around our own core values.

Now, one could argue that the top mistake is not doing any marketing at all and simply relying on word-of-mouth referral to grow our business, and they wouldn’t necessarily be wrong. Not saying that word-of-mouth referrals are bad, but we can’t simply rely on something we have no control over. In addition, the biggest challenge I have seen with word-of-mouth referrals is the fact that pet owners will then want to work with you in particular and no one else, even though you are growing and adding other therapists to work with you. That is a big frustration of many successful business owners who I have met: their schedule is busy and even has a waitlist, but they struggle to fill up the schedule for the other therapists in their clinic.

But the biggest mistake I have seen canine rehab therapists make is simply not having a gameplan on how to approach their marketing strategy, and instead just doing more and more stuff to see what sticks. When it comes to marketing, the basic premise is that we absolutely need to develop a game plan and a strategy on how we will approach it. That may sound tedious and maybe the last thing you would want to do, but just throwing things at the wall and seeing what sticks never works because without a plan we don’t even setup a goal of what we want to accomplish, and without a goal we will always feel like we need to do more and more thus creating a “hustle mentality” that many business owners find themselves thinking that they always need more… more leads… more paying clients… more money… more time… more, more, more. I will likely have a whole blog post about this topic in the future but we should not consider being busy for the sake of being busy a badge of honor, and yet a lot of business owners find themselves thinking like that.
